Brightness Setup

Home Up PC interface card SEM connections Software installation Brightness Setup Software Quickstart Calibration

Very important preliminary step:

Just one minor detail before we adjust the brightness.  If you haven't done so, please run the image collection executable and exit back to Windows.  This will create the support files referenced in the previous section Software installation.  Navigate to the file DBCMODE.CFG file and open it with Notepad or another ASCII editor.  If you double click on the DBCMODE.CFG file, Windows will ask you what program to open it with.  Scroll down and select Notepad, but be sure to uncheck the 'Always use this program to open this type of file' box.  DBCMODE.CFG will be created in the directory where the image collection software resides.   If you have implemented a type 0 interface, the first line in the DBCMODE.CFG file must be a 0 (zero).  If you have implemented a type 1 interface, the first line in the file must be a 1.  This will allow the image collection software to determine that one or both relays must be energized to collect images.

Now to see the first image.........

Since the DRV-2000 can sense and adjust to SEM brightness levels, only a coarse adjustment is necessary.  Refer to the picture below to locate the adjustments.

  1. Obtain a sample that won't charge and which can be viewed at low magnification. Ideally something that can be imaged without degradation.   Since you'll be doing an aspect ration calibration in a few minutes, we suggest a sample of known aspect ratio.  If a standard can't be obtained, a SEM aperture or TEM grid will work well.
  2. Bring an image up on the SEM; low mag., large spot size, reasonably well focused at twice the capture magnification. Don't focus at any greater than 10 times the capture magnification.   Set the brightness and contrast at the settings you would normally use.
  3. Turn to your PC, and bring up the image capture software.  Click on the 'Misc' menu, then the 'SEC Preview'  option.
  4. Press the 'Home' key.  This will set the values of the video pre-scaling circuitry to their median values.
  5. Adjust the SEC offset adjustment until an image is obtained.  Note that if your SEM produces unusually high amplitude video signals, you may need to remove the jumpers which activate the video attenuator.
  6. Repeat this process for the BSE signal.

This image shows the adjustments referenced in the procedure above.  Note the following:

Blue multi turn trimpots which set the X and Y scan amplitude.  These change the image size on the PC monitor.  Clockwise increases the scan amplitude, thus shrinking the image on the PC monitor.
Two sets of jumpers (extreme lower left and about 1 inch to the right) which activate a video attenuator.  This is required for SEM's that have an 'unusually robust' video signal.
4 single turn (270 degrees) potentiometers at the lower right.  These set the X and Y scan offset, and the SEC and BSE video brightness.  From left to right they are: X offset, Y offset, BSE brightness, and SE brightness.
