Simple point to point measurements can be taken with the MEASURE routine. The routine is accessed by selecting the 'MEASURE' button on the top menu. The following data entry window appears. It is essential to enter the correct magnification (and have done a good aspect ratio and magnification calibration) to get accurate measurements.
A 1:1 aspect ratio image is collected when this function is selected. If ABC is on, the image will be collected with ABC. The image will also be collected at the current scan speed. After the image is scanned an (X Y) coordinate display will appear at the lower left. The user simply clicks the mouse at the first reference point, then a second. The points are connected with a straight line and the linear distance between them is calculated. The distance is displayed at the bottom of the screen. This distance is displayed as X displacement, Y displacement and the distance between the points using the Pythagorean theorem. Multiple features can be measured and the distance readout will be updated with the most recent measurement. The latest version of MEASURE also displays a measurement number near the last point clicked, and displays the measurement in the column at the upper left of the CRT. Total (accumulated) distance and Average distance are also updated on the display with each new measurement. The F1 key can be used to capture the image.
Please
note that normally an image would be scanned onto the display for
measurement. The gradient image above was generated by a testing device to
simulate a SEM. |
